The New Media area of concentration in the School of Visual Arts at Penn State focuses study on the creation, authoring, exhibiting, and critique of interactive multimedia artworks. Courses in this area enable students to explore and experiment with diverse applications of new media in the visual arts with emphasis on integrating digital processes with current studio practices in two, three, and four-dimensional art and design. In addition to the actual creation of artworks, study in New Media engages students in research methods to advance their technical skills and critical understanding of new media artworks. Courses in new media art explore the nature and potential of digital art through lectures, readings, demonstrations, studio practice, and critiques. Assignments cover a range of digital multimedia applications in sound, image, motion, interactivity, interface design, and media authoring. For undergraduate studies, the School of Visual Arts at Penn State offers a Bachelor of Art (BA) and a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) degree in the area of New Media. The B.F.A. degree requires a portfolio review for placement. For graduate level studies in New Media, a Masters of Fine Art (MFA) degree is offered.
