The New Media area of concentration in the School of Visual Arts at Penn State focuses study on the creation, authoring, exhibiting, and critique of interactive multimedia artworks. Courses in this area enable students to explore and experiment with diverse applications of new media in the visual arts with emphasis on integrating digital processes with current studio practices in two, three, and four-dimensional art and design. In addition to the actual creation of artworks, study in New Media engages students in research methods to advance their technical skills and critical understanding of new media artworks. Courses in new media art explore the nature and potential of digital art through lectures, readings, demonstrations, studio practice, and critiques. Assignments cover a range of digital multimedia applications in sound, image, motion, interactivity, interface design, and media authoring. The School of Visual Arts at Penn State offers a Bachelor of Art (BA) and a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) degree in the area of New Media. The B.F.A. degree requires a portfolio review for placement.
Art (ARTBA) in New Media
The B.A. degree in art provides a comprehensive liberal education coupled with professional resident instruction in art. Depending on each student's objectives and course choices, this degree provides preparation for a professional career, a foundation for graduate studies, or liberal arts education in art. Students must elect the New Media area of concentration. For a B.A. degree in Art, a minimum of 123 credits is required.
Art (ARBFA) in New Media
The Bachelor of Fine Arts is a specialized professional degree that requires thorough preparation and is intended to develop a level of competence that will enable persons who wish to pursue professional careers in new media/digital art and design to prepare themselves for specialized graduate studies, specialized professional training, and/or immediate participation in creative work.
Students who are enrolled in the School of Visual Arts may apply for placement into the B.F.A. program in New Media with a portfolio no earlier than the second semester and no later than the fourth semester.
There will be a continuous review of portfolio and performance of students enrolled in the B.F.A. program throughout the entire program. Students who do not meet the standards or who do not want to continue in the B.F.A. program may enter the B.A. program in art or choose another program of study. For the B.F.A. degree in Art, a minimum of 128 credits is required.
